News of SPEAR Pony Rupert

We were very pleased to receive an update on the progress of Rupert who is now very well looked after by Helen Wigley. Helen writes ......

' Rupert continues to be a pleasure to look after. He now has three further companions, Elly my foundation Arabian mare , Kane and Arabian gelding and Alfie, who is my first home bred foal out of Elly. Rupert spends his days playing and keeping young Alfie (now 2) in line, they have the most wonderful relationship always playing and getting into mischief. Another great friend of Rupert's is our Great Dane Dave, they have endless hours chasing each other around the fields and thank goodness this seems to be keeping Rupert's waist line down. Here are some recent pictures.....'

Yours truly Helen Wigley and Rupert

SCAFELL PIKE SPONSORED WALK  22ND MAY

WE DID IT! A SLIGHT CHANGE TO THE ORIGINAL LINE UP AS MARTIN RUSH HAD TO WORK ABROAD, SO WE WERE JOINED BY HEATHER PEDWELL AND HER BOYFRIEND BEN CROOK.  WE DIDN'T EXPECT TO BE WALKING ON THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR, BUT AT LEAST IT GAVE US SPECTACULAR VIEWS, CONSOLATION FOR SUNBURN DESPITE LASHINGS OF FACTOR 50!

PICTURED AT THE SUMMIT LEFT TO RIGHT AMANDA KYTE, LUKE PEDWELL, HEATHER PEDWELL, DAWN SWIFT, BEN CROOK, LYNN SWIFT, NICK RICH, GEOFF KYTE, JODIE RICH, FRONT TRISH AND MAURICE BOWLER.

THERE WAS BLOOD (LYNN NOSEBLEEDS), SWEAT (ALL OF US), AND TEARS (NAMELESS) DURING THE 10 HOURS IT TOOK US TO WALK FROM SEATHWAITE FARM TO THE SUMMIT AND BACK AGAIN. IT WAS HARD WORK BUT WE HELPED EACH OTHER AND WERE SPURRED ON BY THE THOUGHT OF WHY WE WERE ACTUALLY DOING IT. SOME OF US ALSO ENJOYED IT!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO IS SUPPORTING US AND BEING AMAZINGLY GENEROUS, WE ARE BUSY COLLECTING AT THE MOMENT AND WILL KEEP IN TOUCH RE. THE FINAL AMOUNT RAISED.

Sun Shines on Open Day!!

We had a great Spring Open Day on May 9th. Thank you to all those who came along to support us and visit our animals.

Jasper's Fund - Sponsored Scafell Pike Climb

On 22nd May 2010 a group of 10 novice hill walkers will be completing a charity climb of Scafell Pike to raise funds for SPEAR. Dawn Swift (Spear's Yard Manager), her boyfriend Luke Pedwell and friend Martin Rush, her mom Lynn Swift and friends Jodie and Nick Rich (who had this crazy idea!), Amanda and Geoff Kyte and Maurice and Trish Bowler. The walk to the summit of Scafell Pike will be a suitably tough challenge as it was felt we really needed to demonstrate our willingness to work especially hard for any money we can raise.

We are hoping that people will dig deep and sponsor us (many thanks to those who already have). There is no fixed amount, please give what you can, you know it is going to an excellent cause. The climb will be totally self funded (we pay for our own accommodation, travel and blister packs!) so you can be rest assured that every penny we raise will be going to Jasper's Fund.

If you would like to sponsor us - thank you! You can do so safely and easily by visiting our page at  Just Giving

Scafell Pike in the Lake District, is the highest peak in England, some 970 metres high. The climb we are attempting will be from Seathwaite which is considered the toughest route, in fact the route takes in a total ascent of 1,539 metres, a walk of 10 miles, which will take approximately eight to ten hours. This is not just a walk, there are a few scrambles, both up and down, as well as taking in 2 additional peaks, Great End 910 metres, and Ill Crag 935 metres, hence bagging three significant peaks in one go.

Our commitment to you is that we will start and do our very best to complete the challenge and we will ensure our photograph is published on the SPEAR website, at the summit, as proof we didn't just stay in the pub!
